10km challenge - Day 2

12 week 10km challenge:
Day 2:             Walk briskly for 30 minutes.

Thanks to my regular walks, I knew that physically this day would not be a challenge.   What I did not count on was how much effort it was to actually convince myself to go for a 30 minute walk!   After an average day of class, and an equally average shopping trip (where I was stuck at the front of a queue with a mound of groceries and a card machine that chose to decline my card three times!) all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and sleep.   But instead, I put on my takkies and went walking (briskly) for 30 minutes.   It’s amazing how your watch seems to slow when you know that you have to do something for a certain length of time, but I ignored my throbbing head and complaining sub-conscious and stuck it out.   Here’s to a successful day 2!

Shape 12 week 10km challenge

As most of you know, as of about 5 weeks ago, I decided to start a fitness programme so that I would be totally ready for my cousin’s wedding.   Since I am honourable to the blogger’s code of “do not lie or make up stuff so that your life sounds more interesting”, I have to be honest with you and say that (whilst I had the best intentions) I didn’t follow my regime as well as I had hoped.   All of the core exercises have been a breeze, but the running ... let’s just say that I have not yet overcome my hatred.   And despite the exercise that I did manage to do, I still have failed to shift that nagging 1.5kg that insists on clinging to my belly/thighs (not a pretty image, but you should see it in the flesh!).   Although I haven’t put on any weight, I haven’t lost any either, and I am definitely not at the stage of running fitness that I want to achieve.

So the time has come (the walrus said) to try something new.   And thanks to my lovely friend Lynne Avis, that something is the Shape 12 week 10km fitness challenge.   The whole point of the programme is to work up your fitness slowly, as opposed to immediately trying to run for 20 minutes and never doing it again – sound familiar?   And I am hoping that by blogging about it, I have a way of holding myself accountable.   So let us begin.

12 week 10km challenge
Day 1:             Walk 5 minutes. Jog 3 minutes. Repeat twice.

This wasn’t too difficult, but I do think that I deserve bonus points for going out in drizzly weather and for the fact that Vredehoek is very hilly so that counts as extra work.  Although the mere fact that I am looking for bonus points probably disqualifies me from getting them doesn’t it?   Oh well, day 1 was a success!

A List Person

I think that it is safe to say that people can be divided into two types: list people and non-list people.   I am a list person.   I think that this largely stems from the fact that I was brought up by a highly organised mother (thanks Mum!)... that and I get distracted very easily.   Although never officially diagnosed, I have decided that I have ADHD when it comes to shopping.   There is no such thing as just stopping by the shop to pick up a loaf of bread, oh no!   When shop owners see me coming, they smile with glee as they steer me towards the aisle with all of the excitingly unnecessary “but look it’s in a limited edition tin” sort of products.   I can enter Pick ‘n Pay with the intention of buying ingredients for a chicken casserole, and leave an hour later with a basket full of things that I bought on special, having forgotten the chicken.

This is why I need a list.   And in all honesty, I find it incredibly satisfying to pick out a brightly coloured pen and cross out a bullet point in a highly efficient manner.   Because of this, it is important to put things on your list that you would actually do in any case.   For example, here is a list that I compiled on Saturday:
    -           wake up 09:30
    -           have breakfast
    -           make a list

<this meant that I already had three things to cross off my list before I had even started!>

-          shower & wash hair
-          shave legs
-          get dressed
-          paint nails

<these are still the usual things that I would do on a Saturday, but one feels so much
more productive when one writes them down!
-          do some work
-          tidy
-          have lunch
-          get petrol
-          pick up friends for Kalk Bay

Now yes, having reviewed the above, a cynic would probably say that it was only necessary for me include the last five points on my list.   That cynic is clearly not a list person.   And I smiled each and every time I crossed off one of my 12 (yes 12) bullet points, so that’s all that matters.

Twilight's Nutty Madam

As some of you may have gathered, I am not a Twilight fan.   Nor do I care about the romantic fluctuations of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s relationship.   Having said that, last week 5FM’s Gareth Cliff played a clip from Twilight’s self-proclaimed biggest fan, and it was so funny that I had to share it with you.

Emma Clark is the ultimate Twi-hard.   To say that she loves Twilight and all things Twilight-related would be an understatement.   In her spare time (of which she seems to have an excessive amount), Clark films herself as she watches the Twilight movies.   Yes, you read this correctly, she films HERSELF.   Posted under the username “NuttyMadam3575”, Clark has uploaded numerous Twilight-related videos to YouTube over the past four years, however it is her latest video that has catapulted Clark into the sparkling limelight.

<A quick side-note for those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few weeks: Kristen Stewart was photographed cheating on her beloved Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders.   Sanders is the married (for-now) director of Kristen's latest movie 'Snow White and the Huntsman', and is far better looking than pale and pasty Pattinson.>

“HOW COULD YOU DO THIS KRISTEN?!” depicts Clark despairing over the demise of 'Robsten', and includes much swearing and wailing and gnashing of teeth.   This cinematic masterpiece has had over 2 million hits since it was published on July 25, 2012, and its popularity seems to be growing daily.   I had a feeling that these kinds of crazies existed out there, and now I have my proof.
